Luka Jovic became one of the hottest prospects in world football in the 2018-19 season in which the Serbian scored a total of 27 goals while ensuring European football for the German side. Real Madrid signed the Serbian international after that season to bring him as a long-term successor for Karim Benzema. But in his first season with Los Blancos, Jovic got caught up with injuries and was given little time to play as he scored just twice in 27 appearances for the club.

4. Andy Carroll

In the 2010-11 Premier League Season, Andy Carrol went on to score 11 goals in 19 appearances that caught the eye of all the big clubs around the country. With Fernando Torress leaving Liverpool, the Red went in for Andy Carroll for a club-record breaking fee of 35m. That season, Liverpool also signed Luis Suarez from Ajax who has an instant hit, which put Carroll under pressure. The English striker proved to be one of the worst transfers in the clubs history as he only scored six goals in his three years spent at Anfield.

Fernando Torres cost Chelsea 50 million pounds from Liverpool and has been considered as one of the worst transfers in the history of football. The Spanish striker never achieved his full potential like he did at Liverpool and one of the reasons could have been his transfer fee that weighed down his ability to become the striker Chelsea hoped for while signing him. The hype around the signing was very special but the performance and experience rounded it all, especially for Chelsea fans. As a result, Chelsea had to loan out the striker and announced the signing of Didier Drogba and the rest as we all know is history.

2. Romelu Lukaku

Inter Milan to Chelsea – £97.5m

If you are not a Chelsea fan, the whole Lukaku-Chelsea saga was nothing but funny. Two seasons ago, Lukaku was the Serie A top scorer as he helped Inter win the league. Such a performance got Chelsea re-signing the striker for a fee of £97.5m. The striker was tipped to replicate his form but instead he scored only 15 goals in 45 appearances, to make things worse he also said in an interview that he missed Inter before being frozen out of the team by Thomas Tuchel.

The Blues, who were desperate to part ways with the striker for the coming season, shifted Lukaku back to Inter on loan.

1. Philippe Coutinho

After Neymar’s departure from the club, Barcelona had a lot of money in their hands and tried everything to replace him. So, in came Phillipe Coutinho from Liverpool for a smashing fee of 142m. The Brazilian was awful as he failed to perform consistently in a Barca shirt. Despite some reasonable showings in his first two seasons, it became clear that Barca did not want Coutinho and loaned him out to Bayern Munich where he played an active role to knock Barcelona out of the competition.

After winning the Champions League at Bayern, the Little Magician returned to Catalonia and remained as an unsellable player due to his high wages until Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa took him back to the Premier League in the 2022 January Transfer Window.
