Although the sport of mixed martial arts, kickboxing, or Muay Thai are all in the developing and growing stage within India, there have been some athletes who are already making an impact in the world of MMA and have established themselves as a threat inside the octagon in Asia’s largest MMA promotion – ONE Championship. 

Today at Man’s Life, we’ll take you through five of the best Indian fighters in the ONE Championship.

5. Gurdarshan “St.Lion” Mangat

When Gurdarshan was a child, his family migrated to Canada, and being an immigrant, he was bullied a lot in school, and to channel that anger, he got into mixed martial arts. Before joining ONE Championship, Mangat used to fight in the BFL where he won the Bantamweight Championship. St. Lion made an extraordinary start to his ONE Championship career in which he knocked out Toni Tauru in the final round which was then followed by a unanimous decision victory against Abro Fernandes. His only loss in ONE came against Reece McLaren in which he tapped out due in the first round due to a rear-naked choke. Mangat’s last pro fight came at ONE Dangal where he faced Roshan Mainam and took home a decision victory to take his record to 4-1.

4. Asha “Knockout Queen” Roka

Asha Roka, who is also known as the Knockout Queen in the world of MMA was a former National Boxing Champion before shifting her attention towards the world of MMA in 2017. Before making her ONE Championship debut, Roka racked up four impressive first-round KO wins in the Super Fight League. 

Life wasn’t the same for her in ONE Championship as she faced back-to-back defeats in her opening two fights in the promotion which took her MMA record to 4 wins and 2 losses. But, just at the age of 23, Roka has a lot more to offer to the world of MMA and is someone you should keep an eye on!

3. Rahul “The Kerala Krusher” Raju

Rahul Raju is a Singapore-based Indian MMA fighter who has become one of the most solid welterweight fighters in ONE Championship. The Kerala Krusher is a mix of all attributes with solid striking and grappling skills and is also a good finisher. In his pro-MMA career, Rahul has had six losses and eight wins. The last opponent he took on was Otgonbaatar Nergui in which the Indian secured a win after 3:54 of round 2 via rear-naked choke. With that victory, Rahul now moved up the division and is set to take on the mighty Drex Zamboanga on the 25th of February.

2. Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phoghat

Coming from one of the most famous wrestling families in India, Ritu Phoghat had huge expectations on her shoulders. She is also known as the daughter of India and was given the title – Indian Tigress for her sheer power and strength to knock her opponents out. Since making her ONE debut in 2019, Phoghat is 7-2 and the closest she came to a title was in December 2021 when she lost to Stamo Fairtex via Armbar after 2:14 minutes of round 2. 

Considering her impressive record in MMA, it shouldn’t be long before she gets yet another title shot and be crowned as the first Indian woman to be crowned as the ONE Strawweight champion.

1. Arjan “Singh” Bhullar

Talking about Indians being champions, how can we not mention Arjan Singh Bhullar. Fighting in the Heavyweight division, he is a folkstyle fighter known for his devastating power and endurance inside the octagon. Arjan is an Indian-origin fighter who currently stands with an MMA record of 11-1. While he fought in the UFC as well, Bhullar really made a name for himself in ONE Championship where his most recent victory was against Brandon Vera at ONE DANGAL for the ONE Heavyweight Title. In that fight, against all odds, the Indian fighter took Vera down to the canvas before pounding on his to take the victory after just four and a half minutes of round 2.
