Numbers Game – IND vs SA – How Do You Stop David Miller 2.0?

David Miller
A A A tT

David Miller has been reborn as a T20 batter in the last two years, and here are some of the numbers behind his incredible resurgence in the shortest format in this period!

It is no exaggeration to say David Miller has been one of the best middle-order batters in world cricket since 2021, with the left-hander averaging 51 at a strike rate of 153 in T20 internationals in that period. Miller starred in South Africa’s impressive run in the 2021 T20 World Cup – where they lost just one game to eventual champions Australia – before playing an instrumental role in the Gujarat Titans’ title-winning campaign. The left-hander scored 481 runs at a strike rate of 142 and an average of 68, helping the new franchise win the title in their debut season in the competition.

David Miller's record in T20Is since 2021

vs Pace: Average – 38 | Strike Rate: 164

vs Spin: Average – 154| Strike Rate: 135

Miller was always an incredible player of fast bowling throughout his career, but what has changed for him in the last two years is he is now also an excellent player against all types of spin, making him a complete batter. As the numbers above show, Miller has dominated the pacers since 2021 in T20Is with a strike rate of 164. However, to add to his range versus pace, he has also become virtually impenetrable against spin bowling – averaging 154 runs per dismissal in 18 T20Is – making him very difficult to slow down in the back half of the innings.

How can India stop him in the 4th T20I?

Team India haven’t had much of a chance against Miller in the first three T20Is, but one option they can try in the final two matches is Umran Malik. The SRH speedster conceded just 13 runs in 13 balls against Miller in IPL 2022 and dismissed him on one occasion.
