It has been a terrible start to IPL 2022 for the Mumbai Indians with six defeats in six matches, but the one shining light in their season has been the South African teenage sensation Dewald Brevis, who is our surprise package of the week.

Baby AB has taken to the IPL like a duck to water and the 18-year-old has scored 117 runs in four innings at a phenomenal strike rate of 172. But more than just the runs, it’s the way he has taken on the bowlers that has been so impressive for someone of his age. Brevis smashed Rahul Chahar for four consecutive sixes and took 28 runs in one over – the most by an MI batter in IPL history – against the Punjab Kings in Pune and has treated these world-class bowlers as if he is still playing U-19 cricket.
The South African continued this onslaught for the five-time champions against the Lucknow Super Giants at CCI, with the teenager playing an unbelievable cameo off 31 from 13 deliveries to give MI a lighting start in the powerplay. Given their terrible start and struggling bowling attack, the Mumbai Indians won’t be finishing in the final four this season in the IPL, but the saving grace for the five-time champions has been the unearthing of a batting gem in Dewald Brevis.
The South African has been untroubled by the quality of bowlers at the highest level and considering his performances so far in the IPL, the 18-year-old seems to have all the tools and the abilities to dominate world cricket in the years to come.
