The Islanders won the league and the shield double in the 2020-21 season of the Hero Indian Super League but could only finish fifth last season, falling short by three points to fourth placed Kerala Blasters FC. Given the encouraging start, their campaign ended in disappointment but now they have kickstarted preparations for next season with the signing of former Jamshedpur FC playmaker Greg Stewart on a two-year deal.

Stewart was a key figure in Jamshedpur’s campaign last season, taking the side to top in the league stage as they made it to the playoffs for the first time in the history of the ISL. The Scotsman contributed a total of 10 goals and 10 assists last season with 61 shots, 73 crosses and an average of 40 passes per match throughout the 2021-22 season. The midfielder was also voted the “Hero of the Season” in his debut campaign

What does this signing mean for MCFC?

The problem with the Islanders squad last season was consistency. None of their attackers could perform on the same level every matchday apart from their star striker Igor Angulo. This time out, they look to provide support to Angulo upfront. With the signing of Alberto Noguera earlier this week to go with the addition of Greg Stewart, we could see a new front three for the Islanders with the likes of Vikram Pratap Singh and Diego Mauricio on the bench.

What has been said?

On signing for MCFC, Stewart said, ““I’m delighted to be here at Mumbai City. The club have outlined their plans and their ambitions right from the outset and I believe joining Mumbai City is the right step forward to continue my journey in India.”

The club’s head coach Des Buckingham was delighted that the club could get Stewart on board as he said, ““Greg is a hugely talented player who has demonstrated this on many occasions last season and to be able to bring him into our group is something I am very excited about.”
