The Premier League loves a breakout star. Players like Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mason Mount, among others, have all burst onto the scenes in the past two or three years, and in 2022/23 we are likely to see a new crop of players emerge as the next best talents on English shores.

There are plenty of elite players waiting in the wings for their opportunities in Premier League clubs.

Here are the five footballers who will have a breakout season in 2022/23.

5. Michael Olise (Crystal Palace)

Crystal Palace have undergone a revolution over the past season under manager Patrick Vieira, and one of the most promising starlets emerging from Selhurst Park has been winger Michael Olise. Injuries meant that Olise started only 12 games after his move from Reading to Palace last season, but the 20-year-old still managed to contribute seven goals for the Eagles in the top flight.

In 2022/23, Olise looks ready to take the next step and join the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Odsonne Edouard to form one of the most exciting front threes in the Premier League. Olise is a wizard with the ball at his feet and is incredibly gifted technically, able to play both as a winger and number eight. The Englishman is more of a creative force than a goal-scorer but has the potential to be one of the best right-wingers in the country with a move to a bigger club possibly around the corner.

4. Armel Bella-Kotchap (Southampton)

The next 50-million-pound plus centre-back is most probably currently plying his trade on the south coast with Southampton. Armel Bella-Kotchap was signed by Southampton this summer from German side Bochum for a miserly fee of €10 million, and it looks like the Saints’ recruitment team has hit this one out of the park. Bella-Kotchap has all the tools needed to be a top-class central defender. The German is dominant aerially, can defend in wide spaces 1v1 and is also smooth on the ball, indicating that he could play for heavy possession sides and bring the ball out from the back.

3. Harvey Elliott (Liverpool)

19-year-old starlet Harvey Elliott had his rise cruelly cut short by an ankle injury last season. But considering how he has started the first four games of the 2022/23 campaign, nothing will be stopping the Liverpool youngster this time around. Elliott has already established himself as one of Liverpool’s most important players amid their current injury crisis, with the Fulham academy star taking over Jordan Henderson’s role as the right-sided central midfielder.

Elliott scored his first Premier League goal last weekend in Liverpool’s 9-0 demolition of Bournemouth and has started every league game for the Reds since their opening day draw away at Fulham. Elliott’s development over the last 12 months has been meteoric, and his technical ability mixed with his understanding and joy for the game guarantees that he will be the future of Liverpool’s midfield in the years to come.

2. Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal)

Eddie Nketiah has already had a promising start to life at Arsenal. The Gunners sharpshooter has scored 23 goals in nearly 100 appearances for the club at the age of 23. However, Nketiah has largely flown under the radar in North London, with other young prospects such as Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Emile Smith Rowe, and William Saliba taking the plaudits. This season, though, Nketiah is primed to come out of their shadow and make a name for himself as one of the best young forwards in England. Nketiah is England’s record goal-scorer at the U-21 level but has developed his game significantly over the past 18 months under the coaching of Mikel Arteta and his staff.

The forward’s dribbling, close control in tight spaces, link-up play, and ability to shield the ball have improved since he broke onto the scenes and using these tools, Nketiah could make the jump to the first XI permanently this season.

1. Julian Alvarez (Manchester City)

All the hype in the first four weeks of the season has been about Erling Haaland, but another summer signing who could have a similarly significant impact is Julian Alvarez. The Argentine international arrives from River Plate with a phenomenal goal record – 22 goals in 27 starts – and will fit perfectly into Pep Guardiola’s system and style of play.

In the mould of previous Pep wingers such as David Villa, Alvarez can play both through the middle or off the right, and the 22-year-old has the intensity, dynamism and killer instinct needed to make it to the top of the game. Being a World Cup year, 2022/23 could be a big one for Julian Alvarez, where he showcases his true talents on the global stage and makes a difference for both club and country at the highest level.
