Arsenal Football Club have enjoyed an unbelievable start to the 2022/23 football season. The Gunners are sitting pretty at the top of the table in the Premier League, carving a five-point lead over Manchester City after 17 matches, and have a rare opportunity to win their first league title in nearly 20 years this season. However, while Mikel Arteta’s side are playing some phenomenal football, Arsenal’s squad is thin, and a few more injuries could derail the season if they don’t spend in the January transfer window.

Gabriel Jesus has already been ruled out till March, while supplementary attackers Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe are still nursing their injury problems to start the new year. The Gunners must reinforce their ranks this winter if they want to sustain their title challenge.

Arsenal’s number one target in the January transfer window has been Shakhar Donetsk winger Mykhalo Mudryk. The Gunners were interested in signing the 21-year-old in the back half of the summer window but have stepped up their interest in the winter, lodging two bids for the Ukrainian sensation. The reports suggest Arsenal are still far from meeting Shakthar’s lofty valuation for Mudryk, with the Gunners’ latest bid falling short of their €100 million asking price.

With only 70 senior appearances, Mudryk may not be worth that exorbitant fee in this market, but the Ukrainian is still one of the most exciting young wingers in Europe who could add significant firepower to the Arsenal frontline.

2. Marcus Thuram – Borussia Monchengladbach

The Gunners’ main priority in this transfer market is to sign backups to the starting XI. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Eddie Nketiah will be the Arsenal front three for large parts of the second half of the season, but the North London side are short on adequate replacements of genuine quality for that trio. One player who play different positions in the frontline and is available this summer is Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram. The Frenchman is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the Bundesliga and could be available for just €10 million in the January transfer window with just six months remaining on his contract.

3. Alexis Mac Allister – Brighton

This is probably a move which could wait till the summer, but Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister could be perfect for Mikel Arteta’s Arenal in the left-central midfield role occupied by Granit Xhaka. The 24-year-old is Premier League proven and thrived in that attacking midfield role for Argentina at the World Cup, playing a central part in their run to the title in Qatar. Mac Allister has also enjoyed great success under Roberto de Zerbi and Graham Potter in a more deep-lying role at Brighton, and his flexibility could be perfect for this current Arsenal system.

Having tied him down to a contract extension in October, Brighton will demand a steep asking price for the World Cup winner. But signing Mac Allister could be one of the most low-risk, high-reward signings the Gunners could make this January transfer window.
