Five ways to look cool, sexy and most importantly, all grown up in a pair of shorts
Shorts are perhaps THE most controversial piece of clothing in a man’s wardrobe. There are some who believe that wearing a pair of shorts make men look like they’ve dressed up for the first day of school. While those in favour think that they are what their sweat-drenched calves need when the temperature rises. Whether you think shorts are hot or not, they’ve become more than just a summer staple thanks to the pandemic. Here’s how to wear one like a fully-grown, fashion-savvy man that you are….
Shorts have gone shorter, courtesy of singer, actor, and fashion icon, Harry Styles. Well, mostly because of him. Or you could blame it on that now infamous scene from Casino Royale with Daniel Craig. While it works on them, it won’t necessarily be flattering on most mortals. So, the ideal fit lies at a low-thigh sweet spot: Length that hits just below the thighs and right above the knees. This is THE most flattering fit to any body type—as shorts are about creating the illusion of long legs and making you seem taller.
You want your shirt to fall right at the waist, but no lower than the end of your front pocket’s opening. This is why camp collar shirts are perfect for shorts, as they land right at the waist. Low-top shoes are optimal for the same reason, as they too add to the lengthening effect of shorts. Men with chunky quads should opt for a pair with a slight taper to the knee. The edges of your shorts shouldn’t extend beyond hip width, otherwise, you risk looking boxy, which will make your calves appear puny in comparison.
You’ll hardly find a ‘stylish’ man in a pair of cargo shorts. Why you ask? Any man with a discerning eye knows that anything with chunky pockets will make you look bigger and sloppy—ballooning your thighs and butt with airy pockets. Shorts are all about showing off your athletic or lean limbs, and these airy pockets will only do the opposite. Carry a bag for all your things if need be.
The chino short is a classic summer style that’s always a safe bet. They’re ideal because they can be dressed up or down. Ideal for picnics by the beach, the park or even on a yacht! Tailored shorts can be made dressy with a formal shirt or a soft-linen jacket. Denim shorts or jorts, as they’re called, is a great way to recycle a pair of old jeans. This is ideal for weekend escapades, only if you’re brave. Athleisure has made it perfectly okay to wear sports shorts outside of the gym too. Cropped retro swim shorts should be strictly for the pool or a beach vacation.
Boat shoes, loafers and tan brogues are great with tailored shorts for a formal or dressy look. Sneakers work well with denim shorts. Low-top ones with chino shorts lend a cool-guy vibe to a casual look. Wear sandals to the beach/poolside.
The biggest rule of wearing shorts? Confidence! So, try and pick the best one for you, and show off the results of those lower-body workouts in style!
