Here is to no longer forgetting keys and deadlines.
Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you came there in the first place? Or forgotten the name of the person you just met, even though they introduced themselves a minute ago? Well, it has happened to us and we are not proud of it! This got us wondering though, are we seriously having memory issues or is our brain playing tricks with us? We started digging for answers and the solution for all our questions lies in our lifestyle and living habits.
A strong memory relies on the health and vitality of the organ encased in our skull—the brain! While there could be many reasons for our sudden ‘brain-fart moments’, there is nothing a little bit of change and disciple can’t fix. Here is how you can get your memory to be back in shape.
Sounds cliche we know, but there is nothing more important than exerting your body for your overall health. According to the research paper published in the Neuroscience Bulletin, moderate voluntary physical exercise has beneficial effects on brain health. It decreases the risks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia and promotes the effects of antidepressants and anxiolytics (drugs used to reduce anxiety). Here you go! Jog, brisk walk, run or dance your way to better health and memory!
Sleeping like a baby is what the brain needs to reset, and improve its recalling abilities. We know how addicted all of us are to mindless scrolling through social media at night. We really need the sleep guys—breaking our natural sleep cycle severely affects our brain’s power to create memories. Sleep for 7 to 9 hours and watch yourself get better at remembering things. Your GF will be grateful! 😉
The pandemic and WFH really has taken our diet for a toss. We are being careless of what we binge and order in—that’s not okay. A high-calorie diet and too much caffeine with an addition of sugar is a concoction that can play a dreadful part in memory loss. Sure the brain needs glucose to function properly, but according to research in 2017—high intake of sugar can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. A high-calorie diet can impair brain development and the same goes for too much caffeine. Eating healthy significantly improves your verbal memory and helps your brain perform better. Eat ghar ka khaana, and drink lots of water! Best way to make both your mom and brain happy!
For the students who aren’t able to enjoy their college life, we are sorry. Studying at home isn’t anything like attending lectures and being around friends. There’s a lack of environmental stimulation that physical interactions provide. At this point, no one knows when learning practicals through screens will end, but there are other things that you can do to put your brain to work. The more you use your brain for doing things you don’t do regularly the better you’ll be able to process and remember information. The best way to do this is by picking up a new hobby. Learn a new instrument or pick up a new language. It’s challenging for our brain, as we learn something new. This way of working your brain will definitely boost your memory.
What is with the hustle, guys? Stress helps no one and is the biggest enemy of brain development. It kills brain cells and affects that part of the brain that is directly involved in memory making! We know your bosses are demanding, but learn to say NO! Fix realistic expectations and focus on one task at a time. WFH has erased the 9 to 5 culture, but we need a healthy balance between work and leisure time. We stress out when the WiFi crashes or when we can’t find our charger and the phone is dying on us! Ughh! Avoid encouraging any behaviour that could lead to stress (harder said than done)!
