When you’re born to Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, you’re bound to have the genes of the perfect gentleman. That’s exactly what seems to have happened with Farhan Akhtar. It’s not enough that the 47-year-old actor has given us gems like Dil Chahta Hai, Positive, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – he has also used his platform to spread awareness about social evils.

Akhtar launched MARD or Men Against Rape & Discrimination way back in 2013 following the sexual assault and murder of lawyer Pallavi Purkayatha. Because of the weight Akhtar put into this initiative, the project soon began to get endorsed by A-list celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal and Hrithik Roshan.

3. A man we can all be proud of

In a world where men are accused of being insensitive and generally stupid, Farhan Akhtar is that one member of the male species that we can all be proud of. So much so that Akhtar became the first male ambassador for UN Women.

4. Where there is a will, there is a way

The body is as important as the mind and the heart and Akhtar has shown, time and again, that he can achieve whatever he so desires. For the role of Milkha Singh, Akhtar trained for 18 months to achieve the physique of one of India’s most famous sportsmen.

5. His idea of female characters

Being a screenwriter and director, Akhtar has immense power in his hands. And he has used it wisely when it comes to the portrayal of female characters. In Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya, Akhtar ensured that he made his female characters strong and relatable. They weren’t mere arm candy but so much more.

6. Gender-based wage gap

It’s rare to hear actors even acknowledge that there is a gender pay gap in the film industry but Akhtar didn’t just acknowledge it – he’s been vocally against it.
