If you want to get India’s attention, you need only turn to two things – Bollywood or Cricket. The culture of celebrity worship in the country is unimaginable. Stars get stalked, worshipped, have every area of their life dissected and with the advent of social media, their privacy is next to nil. So, can you imagine the obsession when two celebrities come together in holy matrimony? Before social media, the Hema Malini-Dharmendra wedding and the Kareena Kapoor Khan-Saif Ali Khan weddings were, perhaps, the most publicised of all Bollywood weddings. It was a simpler time when the scale of a Bollywood wedding was large but nowhere close to what it is today. Some celebrities like Sonam Kapoor embrace the media frenzy and make it a national event while others like Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli jet off in secrecy and release the information as they see fit. 2021 also started with the hush-hush wedding of Varun Dhawan and Natasha Dalal and we thought of listing 6 other weddings of the last decade which happened away from the media glare.

1. Deepika Padukone – Ranveer Singh

While Ranveer Singh is one the most candid stars in Bollywood, actress Deepika Padukone is a private person. The couple has openly aired their love for each other but were rarely seen displaying overt affection in public. Hence, it came as no surprise when news released that the couple got married in relative secrecy in Italy. While insiders shared whispers of possible wedding shenanigans, the events were only confirmed once the couple shared identical images and captions on their social media accounts. Their grand receptions in Mumbai and Bengaluru were far more open with the newly-married couple happily indulging the paparazzi.

2. Virat Kohli – Anushka Sharma

What do you get when the captain of the Indian Cricket Team gets married to one of Bollywood’s most successful actors? A smartly-planned wedding that is more heavily guarded than Fort Knox, apparently. The couple’s wedding was a masterclass in how to evade the paparazzi. The closest the paps got to the wedding was one grainy video of the wedding location taken from miles away. To date, there exist only a few images and videos from the Virushka wedding, the most popular one being the Din Shagna Da video which went viral on social media.

3. John Abraham – Priya Runchal

John Abraham indeed got married in 2014 but the Bollywood hunk’s wedding came as a massive shock to the Indian populace, the majority of which wasn’t even aware that Abraham was dating somebody. Considering his past relationship with Bipasha Basu, the media had assumed that Abraham’s relationship would be the talk of the town. However, the Abraham-Runchal wedding was a hush-hush affair that came to light only when Priya Runchal shared a few images on her social media account.

4. Rani Mukerji – Aditya Chopra

Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra are one of B-town’s most unconventional couples. Chopra is the film industry’s most famous recluse, with there being a total of about three available images of the filmmaker that are available on the internet. Mukerji, of course, was one of Bollywood’s most successful actors in the 2000s. The couple allegedly struck up a firm rapport due to Mukerji’s frequent collaboration with YRF and while rumours of their relationship began doing the rounds as early as 2011, the couple got married in a secret Italian ceremony in 2014. Their wedding was confirmed on April 22, 2014, when YRF issued a statement.

5. Urmila Matondkar – Mir Mohsin Akhtar

Urmila Matondkar was arguably Bollywood’s most popular actress in the 90s. The Rangeela star was deemed a sex symbol who could also pull off intense roles. The actress got hitched to her Kashmiri boyfriend, Mir Mohsin Akhtar, in a private ceremony in 2016 and the media had no clue till Matondkar revealed the news. The wedding was highly exclusive with only family and friends invited. The wedding ceremony took place at Matondkar’s residence.

6. Preity Zinta – Gene Goodenough

While the wedding itself was a low-key affair, the speculation leading up to it was anything but. There were wild rumours about Zinta’s love life and her impending wedding. The couple got married in a private ceremony in Los Angeles in 2016. The gathering was intimate and exclusive with only family and a few close friends being invited. However, the couple did host a grand party for Zinta’s Bollywood friends in Mumbai later.
