Many people believe cars to be a depreciating asset. However, they may be wrong as the record for the world’s most expensive car sold at an auction has been broken again. Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR has sold at a private auction at an eye watering price of more than Rs. 1,000 crore. The previous record was held by the Ferrari 250 GTO, which is also said to have fetched more than Rs. 540 crore in a private sale.

According to a report by Hagerty, one of only two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupes ever made has sold for approximately $142 million or roughly Rs. 1,100 crores at a private auction. The Silver Arrows racecar was displayed to select bidders at Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe are essentially the hard-top versions of the legendary W196S racecars. The legendary racecars gained their reputation by winning 9 out of 12 races they entered and helped Juan Manuel Fangio to win two drivers championships in 1954 and 1955.

The German auto giant has not yet confirmed the sale proceeds but if true, this will make the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe the most expensive car sold at an auction. The previous record was held by the Ferrari 250 GTO that sold for $48 million or roughly Rs 373 crores in 2018 during the Monterey Car Week. Another Ferrari 250 GTO was reportedly sold at Monterey in 2018 for $70 million or roughly Rs. 540 crore.
