DeLorean Alpha5 EV was recently unveiled as the vehicle that is set to revive a brand defunct for nearly 40 years. The release of the EV is scheduled for August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The original DMC DeLorean, sold from 1981 to 1983, was a two-door sports car that was made popular with its feature as a time machine in the Back to the Future film franchise as well as its gullwing doors. The latter also makes an appearance on the upcoming DeLorean Alpha5.

The revival of the DeLorean brand will begin with the Alpha5, which is said to be limited to just 88 units — harking back to the speed required to activate time travel on the original DeLorean in the Back to the Future films. DeLorean CEO Joost de Vries said that the Alpha 5 will have performance to match the Mercedes-AMG GT and probably the higher-end variants of the Porsche Taycan.

The details about the powertrain of the DeLorean Alpha5 are yet to be unveiled. However, the company claims that the EV will have a range of more than 300 miles or 480 kilometres. It also claims that the Alpha5 will max out at 155mph or 248kmph and will have a battery capacity of more than 100kWh. The 0-98kmph time is estimated to be 2.99 seconds with a drag coefficient of 0.23Cd.

On the outside, the DeLorean Alpha5 looks futuristic and takes inspiration from the original DeLorean with its huge gullwing doors. The inspiration carries forward with the louvres on the rear windshield and the turbine style alloy wheels.

Since DeLorean has only shown off images of the Alpha5 concept, the interior of the upcoming EV seems fairly straightforward with a huge digital instrument cluster being the only object obstructing the view of the driver. The infotainment screen is seemingly placed lower than the steering wheel.

Following the Alpha5, DeLorean plans to launch a V8-powered coupe, a battery-electric sedan, and a hydrogen-fuelled sports SUV.
